Go Red Healthy Heart in 2nd Grade!

Friday, 2/3: Kick off for Go Red. What does your heart do? We will learn why our heart is so important.
Wear Red!!

Monday, 2/6: What does your heart look like? We will take a look inside your heart.

Tuesday, 2/7 Healthy Heart Activity Day. We will be doing lots of physical activity. Wear your sweats and sneakers.

Wednesday, 2/8: No Smoking! Smoking is very BAD for your heart! Create a no smoking poster or chant to share with the class. You may decorate “yourself” to promote NO Smoking! For example make a shirt or hat. Be creative!

Thursday, 2/9: Eating Healthy helps you to have a healthy heart. We will be making a healthy heart fruit salad! Please send in a baggie of your favorite fruit cut up that we can add to our salad!

Friday, 2/10 Go Red Celebration! We will share what we learned about the heart with other classes! Wear Red!

The following week we will learn how being a nice friend helps our heart!

"Polar"ific Party

After three weeks of learning about POLAR BEARS, taking notes about POLAR BEARS, writing a research report about POLAR BEARS, and sharing POLAR BEAR facts we celebrated with a POLAR PARTY! thank you to ALL the parents who sent in white snacks. All we missed was the snow outside to play in !

The GIFT of GIVING

In lieu of gifts we collected money and went to Aubrey's and shopped for the Food Pantry. We shopped for toilet paper, shampoo, macaroni and cheese, hot cocoa, coffee, pretzels, paper towels, cake mix, cereal, toothbrushes, toothpaste and laundry detergent . After we walked to the food pantry and gave them our donation and we even helped to put the items away. What a great way to GIVE this holiday Season... THANK YOU 2nd grade!

Thanksgiving Feast

Our Thanksgiving Feast was delicious. We enjoyed turkey, potatoes, gravy, corn, squash, cranberries, applesauce, stuffing, corn bread, pumpkin bread, and homemade pies! Thank you to ALL of the parents and grandparents who helped us on this special day. If you see Brayden's mom be sure to say thank you for preparing the potatoes, gravy and squash. A thank you to Mr. Nebbia, Mrs.Scales, and Mr .Votra for setting up and cleaning up the gymnasium. Thank you to Mr. Menard for carving the turkey and joining us for our feast. A special thank you to my mom for baking 12 pies. At the end of our feast our tummies were full and our hearts were thankful.

Interactions

Interactions occur when one object changes or influences another object. We learned that a battery, copper wire, and a light bulb interact. We also learned that if you add oxygen to BTB an interaction takes place. Interactions are exciting!

Spiderific Celebration

They are creepy, crawly and fascinating ... they are SPIDERS! We celebrated our unit on Spiders! We made spider webs, turned our pumpkins into spiders and enjoyed spider treats. We got together with 3rd grade and shared some Spider Facts! It was a spiderific Day!

Fun Fact Friday....We practice our basic math facts on Friday afternoons. We play games and use flashcards, dice and even a soccer ball to learn our FACTS. There is no practice worksheets just FUN!

We think they are creepy, fascinating, scary, awesome and amazing......they are SPIDERS! We learned many facts about spiders. Did you know they are not an insect? We used yarn to make "Fact"inating webs and we used adjectives to describe glitter webs we made. We learned spiders spin five different types of webs.

Ahoy! We celebrated Miss Silva's teaching experience with a pirate party. We went on a treasure hunt and found TREASURE for Miss Silva ,a bag of books. We enjoyed Pirate cupcakes and veggies. Many Colors of Second Grade

Second graders are red because we are on fire with our math facts. Second graders are yellow like the sun because we are shiny. Second graders are green like frogs because we are always jumping and growing. We are black like the hands on the clock because we are always moving from center to center. We are white like oops tape because we sometimes make mistakes. We are blue like bins because we hold many memories. Second graders are orange like a basketball because we are bouncing and slam dunking ideas. Second graders are all different colors like the legos they build their imagination with!

Duck Decoys

Friendship Celebration

We completed our Friendship Unit by creating crowns, making bracelets, coloring puzzles, sharing books and interviewing our friends! After all of this we enjoyed ICE CREAM SUNDAES together. Our day was "friendalicious" and our sundaes were "delicious" (as you can see) !

Are you Heart Cool or A Heart Fool?

We are all Heart cool! We eat healthy, get lots of exercise, play Wii active games, and go to the doctor for checkups. Most importantly we pledged to NEVER SMOKE so we can stay heart COOL!
We ended our Heart Healthy Week with a yummy fruit salad, played Wii active games, and wore our RED to support the American Heart Association!

What do you know about Polar Bears? We learned that Polar Bears live in the Arctic Circle, hunt seals, have three layers to keep them warm and many many more facts! We published a class book and shared our book What Do YOU Know About Polar Bears with each class. We had a Polarific Party to celebrate our book.

Generosity

Instead of exchanging gifts in the classroom everyone donated money and we walked to Aubrey's and purchased items for the food pantry. Thank you to Aubrey's for your generosity! We walked the items to the food pantry and had the opportunity to learn how the food pantry works. They warmed us up with some hot chocolate and we headed back to school feeling warm and fuzzy inside!

Around The World in FIVE days.......

Mo’adim Lesimkha! Feliz Navidad! Joyeux Noel! Светлого Рождества!

We traveled around the world in five days! We visited Australia, Mexico, France, Israel and Russia. We learned about their traditions, language and location. We enjoyed Christmas on the beach in Australia. We ran out of pennies playing Dreidal in Israel. We were amazed by the lights in France. We enjoyed singing Feliz Navidad in Mexico. While Visiting Russia we learned to say "Spaseeba" and we played with nesting dolls! We finally landed at the North Pole and are ready to celebrate our Christmas next week. It was a great vacation !

Letters to Santa!

On Thursday, we received a delivery at school from Santa..... 14 red balloons!

We attached our letters to Santa asking him to give to someone who needs something and then we sent them off. Up, Up and Away!

We spent the week reading many different Gingerbread stories. At the end of the week we voted on our favorite and it was ..........The Library Gingerbread Man!

On Friday, we had the opportunity to play with gingerbread dough. We used our senses to descirbe how it smells, looks, tastes, sounds and feels! As you can see FUN was had by all!

Thank you to everyone who helped with our feast. We enjoyed turkey cooked by Mr. Pettit, applesauce and stuffing prepared by 2nd grade and cornbread, pumpkin bread and cranberries made by 1st grade. Brayden Wiley's mom prepared our potatoes and squash and Kennady's grandma baked 12 pies. Yummy! Thank you to grandparents and parents that came to help serve and Mr. Nebia and Mrs. Scales for helping to set up and clean up. A big thank you to Mr. Menard for carving our turkey. Our Spiderific Celebration

Grade 2 had a spider celebration! Our class dressed in black. We created a story about what we would do if a spider was heading toward our school lunch and we played a game to see who was spider smart. We had spider treats, made spaghetti spider webs and watched Charlotte's Web.

It was SPIDERIFIC! Thank you to Mrs. Rupp and Mrs. Davis for the treat and spooky punch!

The Cape Vincent Fire Department visited us for Fire Prevention Day. We practiced how to Stop, Drop and Roll. We practiced calling 911 and we had the opportunity to try on their gear. Our favorite part was the fire hose competition ( great job 3rd grade). Thank you for all you do!!!

Preparing for a Green 2010-2011 School Year

It won't be long and we'll be beginning the school year learning how important it is to Recycle, Reuse and Reduce. I'm very busy preparing for a green year! The classroom is set up and I'm putting up bulletin boards and planning lessons. I hope all of you are enjoying your summer. You should have received your letter and supply list. I'm sure you are busy creating a "masterpiece" from your recyclables. I'm anxious to hear how all of you have helped our earth this summer. Looking forward to Sepember 7th!
